I just finished reading the book “The Way of the Wolf” written by Jordan Belfort and to give you an overall feedback, it was a great read. I learned a lot from this book, particularly sales techniques and how Jordan Belfort thinks.
As you are probably aware, Jordan Belfort is known as the Wolf of Wallstreet. You may have seen that movie who Leonardo Dicaprio played as Jordan Belfort. I must say that that movie was absolutely awesome. Most people who I know watched the movie said that the movie sucked and it was simply about sex, drugs and money but I personally think it was more than that.

To me, Wolf of Wallstreet is a movie about redemption. Yes, Jordan Belfort is guilty of selling junk penny stocks to people but on the other side of the coin, we can learn so much from his mindset on persistence, determination, handling adversity and success.
Jim Rohn once said to learn from negative as well as positive. It’s too bad failures don’t give seminars. Wouldn’t it be valuable information to know how a guy messed up his life for the past 40 years? So while others were running away from learning from Jordan Belfort, I think it’s wise to learn how to become a master salesman from this man but avoid the mistakes he’s made from it.
Jordan Belfort has also served his time in prison and from what I’ve read, he’s still paying off the millions he owes to the people he made money off. Yes it’s justice being served but at least, he’s correcting his mistakes. Most people who you read in the media give up, suicide themselves and end their lives because it’s over. However I’m inspired by Jordan Belfort for he’s still working at it and paying off his debts.
Why I Learn Sales
The reason why I’m learning how to sell and why you should too is because sales is the lifeblood of success. Most people think that sales is a sleazy car salesman but it’s far from the truth.
We are all in the field of sales. Whether you’re deciding which restaurant to eat tonight with your spouse or you’re applying for a job you want, you need to learn how to sell in order to get your way in life. As my mentor Grant Cardone says, “sell or be sold”. You can either sell on your reason or you can be sold on their reason not to.
Looking back over the years, I can clearly see that it doesn’t matter how good your product is, what truly matters is how you sell it. If you have a great product but you don’t know how to sell it, you will never be successful. But if you have just an average product but you’re a master of sales, you will succeed.
The world is littered with great products but no salesman to get it in the hands of people. Plus, sales is a vital part of society. Without sales, the world would cease to operate. Things would never be built, things would never move forward and lives would never be changed.
Sales is a service to humanity and without it, the world would stop revolving. Yes Jordan Belfort abused his powers in sales but as with all things in life, nothing and no one is perfect. We simply try our best, fix the mistakes we have and move on.

As I was reading this book, I kept highlighting, circling and writing in the book. This book is packed with so much valuable content and wisdom and is derived from decades of Jordan’s experience. There were a few concepts that I’ve heard before but the way the book was written, you can tell that Jordan Belfort is a true master salesman.
Below are some great things that I learned from the book.
Sales Focused
At the moment, I’m doing a sales course with Grant Cardone and he teaches that there’s two parts in sales. There’s selling and there’s closing. This book focuses on the selling part and goes into great detail on how you can sell better. Jordan Belfort covers many techniques such as body language, tonality, language patterns and managing your state to improve your sales.
There’s 12 chapters and each chapter covers Jordan’s best of the best in sales.
Neuro Linguistics Programming – NLP
Throughout the book, Jordan Belfort talks about the importance of Neuro Linguistics Programming or NLP for short. NLP is a way in which we can manage the state of our bodies to get the result we want. For example, if you were feeling depressed and noticed your body language, you would see that you would slouch a certain way. In order to get that depressed emotion, you would need to behave a certain way.
This is where NLP comes in, by managing your state, you get different results, often instantly. For example, whenever you’re feeling depressed, try standing upright, raising your tone of voice, focusing on the positive things that’s happened in your life and smile. You will find that you’re no longer depressed. This is the hallmark of Jordan Belfort’s sales techniques.
Jordan manages his state so that he’s at optimum level. Whenever he enters a meeting, he’s positive, upbeat and filled with absolute certainty. A powerful way to maintain control in a sales situation.
Advanced Tonality
Jordan Belfort talks about using your tone of voice as a method of selling. When you’re speaking with someone, it’s not the choice of words you use, it’s your tone of voice that conveys the message. He gives a great examples on a typical sentence and then how different it is after you say it in a different tone of voice.
For example, if you were to say your name in a serious tone of voice, it sounds like you’re in trouble. However if you were to raise your tone of voice and say your name like you’re singing it, it sounds like everything is all peachy. The book covers a great deal in handling your tone of voice.
I found this chapter truly useful for I now know the importance of managing your tone of voice and practicing it everyday.
Straight Line Selling
Throughout the book, it’s obvious that Jordan Belfort is selling his course “Straight Line Selling”. This course goes into sales in a deeper level and he ties in his concepts to this course throughout the book.
Yes, I’m going to sign up to his course very soon and will post a review on this one too.
Conclusion on the way of the wolf summary
Overall, this was a great read and I definitely learned a lot from this book. Although the book does cover sales in great detail, I feel that it’s missed out two very important components in sales – managing objections and closing. There’s a lot of content on the techniques of selling but more often than not, you’ll come across situations where the customer will say “I’ll think about it” or “We don’t have the budget” or “I need to talk to my spouse”.
These objections always come up and it would be great to hear from Jordan Belfort how he would handle these. Also finally, how to close clients. There’s a page int he book where Jordan talks bout using the phrase “Sounds fair enough?” which communicates sincerity but I found it hard to find much content on how to close a client which is the most important part of the sale.
So as a result of reading this book, I would give this book 4.5 out of 5 chainsaws.
